Mario Vanegas, Building & Grounds Supervisor
mario@calvary-church.org

Mario was born in Nicaragua. Caught in the political turmoil of a revolution, his parents fled with their six children to Guatemala when Mario was 17 to prevent him from being drafted in the Sandinista army. Finding little welcome in that country, three years later Mario and his brother came to the United States as political refugees and settled in the Washington, D.C. area. Speaking little English, they worked various construction jobs while they learned the language and the culture. Mario became an American citizen in 1995.

Most of Mario’s family, including his parents, now live in the Silver Springs area. He met his wife in 1988 at the D.C. First Church of the Nazarene and they were married in 1990. They have two children and a dog. Mario and his family are active in the Igelisia del Nazareno where he has served as a member of the board, a youth worker, member of the worship team, and currently as the adult SS teacher.

In 1992, Mario began working at Calvary Church and has the honor of having the longest tenure on staff.
